UHPC Connections for Precast Bridge Systems

• Assisted Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center in developing testing procedures for durable, leak-resistant UHPC connections for precast bridge deck systems (2008).

• Collaborated with industry and trade associations to procure precast deck specimens with UHPC joints for laboratory testing (2008).

• Led design and construction efforts for the first use of UHPC field-cast connections in U.S. bridges, including prestressed concrete deck bulb-tee superstructures and precast deck panels on steel superstructures (2009).

• Developed UHPC field-cast connection details achieving approximately 14 ksi compressive strength within 12–14 hours (2012).

• Developed and implemented heat-curing procedures and strength verification using the maturity method for field-placed UHPC (2012).

UHPC Link Slabs and Joint Elimination

• Developed and implemented UHPC link slabs as part of precast deck replacement projects (2012).

• Developed UHPC link slabs to replace existing deck joint systems while retaining the original bridge deck (2016).

• Developed structural strategies for multi-span bridges linked with UHPC link slabs, including evaluation of thermal, traction, wind, and seismic effects (2017).

UHPC Composite Action and Girder Interfaces

• Collaborated with FHWA and industry partners on development and testing of composite UHPC connections between precast decks and steel or concrete girders.

• Developed and implemented hidden UHPC haunch connections between girder top flanges and precast concrete panels based on laboratory testing (2014).

UHPC Applications for Rehabilitation and Strengthening

• Implemented UHPC connections between existing bridge columns and new precast concrete cap beams (2013).

• Developed and implemented UHPC headers for bridge deck joint systems (2016).

• Developed and implemented UHPC overlays for bridge deck rehabilitation.

• Developed a method for strengthening existing steel through-girders by adding UHPC to the top flange and assisted Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center in developing testing procedures.

National Coordination, Workshops, and Technical Leadership

• Panel member at the 1st International Interactive Symposium on UHPC, participating in technical sessions on UHPC connections and link slabs.

• Organizer of a FHWA-sponsored UHPC workshop covering connections, overlays, link slabs, and steel beam end repairs (2017).

• Member of the organizing committee for the 2nd International Interactive Symposium on UHPC.

• Delivered FHWA-sponsored webinars and technical sessions on UHPC from 2009 to 2019.

• Served as the primary technical point of contact for UHPC-related inquiries within NYSDOT and FHWA’s Every Day Counts initiative.
